Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a major disease contributor to high mortality for children under five years of age in sub-Saharan Africa. We are building upon an existing collaboration between Columbia’s Pediatrics department and the Department of Pediatrics at Makerere University College of Medicine in Kampala, Uganda. We seek to enhance public health capacity associated with SCD in Uganda, including support for a nascent infant sickle-screening program. We hope to develop and implement low-cost large-scale outreach and communication mechanisms to connect geographically dispersed infants and children to timely diagnoses and continuing care; and to understand potential social and logistic barriers to uptake of screening and care.
